Eagle Eye Cherry - Save Tonight Critique

Save Tonight.

Save Tonight is a song made by a band called Eagle Eye Cherry. The whole concept of the music video is about a man (Eagle Eye Cherry himself) talking about leaving his girlfriend/wife and is becoming a series of different people all the way throughout.  The subject matter is effectively shown throughout this particular video due to how he is singing and what he is also doing (for example when he sings the lyrics "You and me and a bottle of wine," he walks into a shop and picks up a bottle of wine, what he is singing, he is actually doing. This video was filmed in Stockholm's Sodermalm district and features Cherry playing different characters and seeing the story from different perspectives, the video presents itself as being one continuous take.

The concept of this song/music video to my knowledge is the first of it's kind and is something new and innovative. The way that the main character appears to be a series of different people (for example when he gets run over, as he walks away he appears to also be the driver of the vehicle) this is a great transition and gives the video a twist which nobody would expect.

The main special effect pictured throughout this video is the way that the main character transitions into everybody else (for example, when he buys a bottle of wine from the shop, as he walks out and the camera fixes onto the shop keeper, he is the shop keeper. Also, another good example would be when he almost gets knocked over by a car, as he stands to walk away the camera fixes on the driver of the vehicle and once again it is him.

In my opinion, I think the main theme/concept of this video is based around empathy. Empathy meaning that it is the capacity to recognize feelings that are being experienced by another person. The story is about Cherry portraying different people and seeing things in a different way from another persons perspective.

The setting/location I think is definitely appropriate for this particular song. The video was filmed in Stockholm's district and I think this location makes a really good set because of how the singer is portraying other people and what he is doing.

I think the music video makes great certain use of color and lighting due to the fact the whole video is shot in black and white, giving the video more depth and tone. The lighting is used quite well, although the video is in black and white, there are certain parts with very bright lights making it look although black and white but very vibrant.

The soundtrack is appropriate because the soundtrack is Cherry himself and it also goes with the video and what he is doing and who he is portraying being the character of several different people, it also flows with the video very well.

Camera angles are used very effectively throughout this video during certain scenes such as for example when Cherry walks into a deli to pay for a bottle of wine, the camera turns right around and fixates on the shop keeper only to reveal that it is Cherry himself. Also another good example is after that particular scene, the camera then shoots a different scene where he is robbing a shop and then he gets knocked over, as Cherry walks out the camera zooms in on his back, appears to go right through and on to the robber which also reveals to be Cherry.
